2002: A Good Season for the Wolfpack
The Pack had a good run during the regular
season and ended with a very strong showing on the Mall. The team won its
last five games to finish second in the American League Coastal division
at 11-4 and 4th
in the end-of-season coaches poll. (No media polls here!)
NC State went in to the tournament as the #5 seed. The
Pack made short work of #28 Pittsburgh in its Saturday opener but dropped
a tough loss to #12 Michigan. Undaunted, the team came back to put away
#20 Georgetown to guarantee a return trip to the beer trailer on Sunday.
In past years, the Pack never came out strong for the
their first Sunday game, but the team got that monkey of their back with
a win over #13 Maryland. NC State was in the hole quickly as William &
Mary chalked up 8 runs in the top of the first, but the Pack went on a
run in the third inning to make a game of it. As the air got hotter, the
Wolfpack bats seemed to get colder in the later innings as the Tribe surged
to a 16-10 win.
