#43 Pack Makes Some Noise in Tourney

The NC State softball team drew the 43 seed in a 66-team field for the league tournament. And more than a few teams were worried about having the Pack in their bracket. State started off the first weekend against #22 Michigan State. left-fielder Jeremy Howell belted a three-run homer of the left-center-field fence, but the Pack had to go to a one pitch tiebreaker inning to pull out the 13-11 upset.

Next Saturday brought #11 Florida and the Pack had little trouble with the Gators, winning 11-5. State got another crack at sixth-seed Wake, but poor Deacon pitching did them in. The Pack walked in 9 runs in a semmingly endless third inning to advance.

The next opponent on Sunday was #30 Indiana. State scored early but inaccurate pitching did the Pack in this time, as the Hoosier batters sat back and walked in a bunch of runs. Now in the loser's bracket, State went up against #12 Penn State. This game wasn't any better, with the Nittany Lions scoring a lot and the Pack not nearly enough.

State's tourney ended with a 3-2 record and what amounts to a top 10 finish - pretty good for a 43 seed. Indiana came out of the loser's bracket and made it to the title game, beating #7 Maryland to force a second game. The Terps won the second game and the title.
