Twenty botanically curious NC State alumns and
friends spent a delightful Saturday visiting the National Arboretum.
Our volunteer guide (at right in straw hat) pointed out the highlights
of the aquatic, bonsai and herb gardens.
At left: Specimens of flowers growing
in the aquatic garden outside the administration building.
At right: A cedar bonsai from the garden's collection.
A reflection of the Capitol Columns in a reflecting
pool. The sandstone columns were removed from the west front of
the Capitol in the late 1950s as part of an expansion project. Benefactors
purchased the columns and displayed as an "acropolis"
on the Arboretum grounds in the 1980s.
The U.S. National Arboretum is
located in northeast Washington, at 24th & R Streets, NE, off Bladensburg
Road. Admission is free and the Arboretum has plenty of free parking.
